Hip Labral Tear Overview

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that lines the hip joint and helps to stabilize the ball-and-socket joint. Hip labral tears are soft tissue injuries that occur in the joint capsule and are caused by structural damage to the hip’s fibrous ring. This condition can be incredibly painful and cause significant disruption to your daily activities, such as making it difficult to put on shoes or walk long distances. If left untreated, hip labral tears can worsen over time, leading to increased pain and inflammation.

There are two main types of hip labral tears:

  • Posterior labral tears: These tears occur on the back side of the labrum and are most often caused by an accidental fall or too much rotational stress placed on the hip.
  • Anterior labral tears: These tears occur in front of the labrum and are typically caused by injury to the joint, such as dislocating your hip during a sporting activity.

Symptoms Of A Hip Labral Tear

When it comes to hip labral tears, the most common symptom is pain in the groin area. This pain may also radiate down the front or side of the thigh, and it usually worsens with activities that involve bending or twisting the hip joint. Other signs and symptoms related to a hip labral tear can include:

  • A limited range of motion in the hip joint
  • Weakness in the leg muscles
  • A clicking, catching, or locking feeling in the hip joint during movement
  • Swelling and tenderness around the hip joint

Conventional Treatment Options

If a doctor diagnoses your injury as a hip labral tear, then there are a few conventional treatment options they will generally recommend depending on how severe the tear is. The following are some of those conventional treatment options:

Corticosteroid Injections

If you’re experiencing pain and inflammation due to your hip labral tear, a doctor may recommend corticosteroid injections to reduce the inflammation and provide temporary pain relief. To be effective, multiple corticosteroid injections may be required.

While this treatment method can provide temporary relief, it is essential to note that long-term use can adversely affect the hip joint, as corticosteroids may weaken the tendons and muscles in the area.

NSAIDs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can also reduce inflammation and pain in the hip labral tear area. NSAIDs should not be taken for long periods of time, as they can cause stomach irritation and other side effects. Common NSAIDs prescribed for hip labral tear pain include ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen sodium (Aleve), and celecoxib (Celebrex).

Hip Arthroscopy

In more severe cases of hip labral tear, a doctor may suggest a surgical procedure known as hip arthroscopy. During this surgical procedure, small incisions will be made in the skin and an arthroscope will be inserted to view the tear. The surgeon can then reattach or remove the torn labrum using specialized instruments. In some cases, the surgeon may need to reshape the hip joint bones to improve the stability of the hip.

While this procedure is generally effective in treating hip labral tears, it carries the risk of infection and other potential complications. Furthermore, it requires a lengthy recovery period and can be costly.

Surgical Hip Dislocation

A surgical dislocation of the hip may be required for more severe hip labral tears. During this procedure, the surgeon will reposition and manipulate the bones in the joint to gain access to the tear and repair it. This type of surgery carries a higher risk of complications than arthroscopy, but it is generally more effective in treating larger or complex hip labral tears.

Labral Reconstruction

If the labrum is in poor condition or is severely damaged, labral reconstruction may be an option. During this procedure, the damaged part of the labrum will be removed and healthy tissue from another part of your body will be attached to reconstruct the labrum. The surgeon will then implant anchors to the hip socket and connect the labrum to the anchor points. Like other surgical procedures, this surgery comes with a risk of infection and other complications, as well as a lengthy recovery period.

Periacetabular Osteotomy

Periacetabular osteotomy involves repositioning the acetabulum to better fit the femoral head, which is the ball-shaped end of the thigh bone. This procedure is generally recommended in cases where the hip joint has become misaligned, as this can result in more wear and tear on the labrum.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma, Or PRP?

PRP therapy is an advanced treatment option that uses the body’s own healing power to treat injuries and illnesses. PRP is derived from a concentration of platelets, which are components of your blood responsible for clotting and initiating tissue regeneration.

Platelets used for PRP therapy are typically taken from the patient’s own blood. Traditionally, the process involves placing the patient’s blood into a bedside centrifuge, which spins the sample to separate out the platelets and other components of the blood. Once separated, these concentrated platelet solutions can be injected directly into the injured area to stimulate natural healing processes.

When injected into an area experiencing pain or inflammation, it activates the healing process by releasing growth factors that aid in regenerating damaged tissue.

PRP for Hip Labral Tears

PRP treatment has been shown to be effective in treating musculoskeletal (MSK) issues because it helps reduce inflammation and pain, as well as promote tissue regeneration. PRP therapy has become an increasingly popular option for people suffering from hip labral tears.

PRP injections can help to reduce inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the hip joint by initiating the healing process. This is done by introducing an abundance of platelets to the affected area, which then release growth factors that stimulate cell regeneration. In addition, it increases collagen production to promote tissue regeneration. This can lead to increased stability and strength in the hip joint over time.

Finally, because it uses a patient’s own platelets, there is no risk of rejection or of adverse reactions.

Why Are Orthagenex PRP Injections Superior?

Although PRP treatment is considered an “alternative” treatment for hip labral tears, it’s by no means uncommon. There are many clinics and medical facilities that offer PRP injections. However, not all providers use the same methods for obtaining or preparing platelet-rich plasma solutions.

At Orthagenex, we believe in providing our patients with the highest quality of care available. Our physicians utilize advanced techniques to ensure we can provide our patients with superior PRP treatments. Unlike other providers, we not only process our PRP treatments in a lab, allowing us to customize our PRP treatment to the needs of each patient, but we also use image-guidance technology to ensure the accuracy of our injections.

To achieve our aim of providing our patients with the best possible care and outcomes, we use only the most advanced techniques for PRP treatments.

Image-Guidance To Place PRP Solutions

At Orthagenex, we utilize the latest image guidance technology to ensure that our PRP solutions are precisely placed where they will be most effective. This includes using MSK ultrasound and fluoroscopy to guide our injections and ensure that the platelet concentrations are injected right where they’re needed.

MSK ultrasound uses sound waves to produce an image of the inside of the body. This allows us to view tissue in real-time, allowing us to ensure that we are injecting the PRP solution exactly where it needs to go.

Fluoroscopy creates images by using a beam of X-rays, providing detailed images and allowing us to view the movement of joint structures in real time. This is especially useful when injecting PRP solutions into harder-to-reach areas, as it ensures that our injections are precise and accurate.

Using image guidance technology gives us an advantage over other providers who rely on blind injections, as we can ensure that our injections are placed exactly where they need to be. This helps us to provide our patients with superior results and faster recovery times.

Lab-Processed For Higher Concentrations Of Platelets

We process our PRP solutions in a lab instead of a bedside centrifuge. Processing our PRP treatments in a lab gives us the flexibility to customize the concentration of platelets in each solution according to each patient’s needs.

By utilizing a lab-processed PRP approach for our treatments, we can provide our patients with higher concentrations of platelets and superior treatment outcomes. It’s also how we are able to offer amber PRP and next-generation platelet lysate (PL) treatments.

Amber PRP vs. Red PRP

The PRP treatments that most providers offer are red PRP treatments. These solutions are rich in red and white blood cells; however, it’s been shown that these components can hinder the healing process by potentially triggering inflammation. As a result of being able to process our PRP solutions in a lab, we can create amber PRP treatments.

Amber PRP is a type of PRP treatment that has been further processed to remove red and white blood cells. Amber PRP treatments are more effective than red PRP treatments because they provide higher concentrations of platelet growth factors while eliminating any potential inflammation-triggering components.

Next-Generation Platelet Lysate

In addition to our amber PRP treatments, we also offer next-generation PL treatments. PL is essentially a more processed version of amber PRP that has been further concentrated and filtered for higher concentrations of growth factors. There are two differences between PL treatments and amber treatments. First, PL solutions contain even fewer components that can trigger inflammation. Second, unlike PRP treatments, PL treatments aren’t time-released, meaning they can release their growth factors all at once. This results in faster and more powerful healing capabilities

Due to the lack of inflammation-triggering components, we often recommend PL treatments for patients who require injections near the spine.

PRP Customized To Every Patient’s Need

Although all PRP treatments are derived from the patient’s own blood, we understand that every patient’s needs are unique. That’s why we believe in providing our patients with customized PRP treatments tailored to their needs. The following are examples of how we customize our treatment solutions:

Solutions Are Customized Using Lab-Processed PRP Solution

As stated above, our PRP treatments are processed in a lab instead of a bedside centrifuge. This helps us to customize our treatments according to each patient’s needs. By utilizing precise techniques and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, we can create solutions that contain higher concentrations of platelets and fewer inflammation-triggering components than traditional red PRP treatments. Additionally, we can remove any components that don’t need to be included in the solution or may inhibit the healing process.

Bone Marrow Concentrate Can Be Used

Bone marrow contains stem cells and growth factors that can help to further accelerate the healing process. In some cases, we may use bone marrow concentrate in combination with PRP treatments. This helps to provide an even more powerful solution that produces superior results.
